Geography Scheme | Year 1/2 | Cycle A | Block 3: Why do They Live There? | Lesson 2: What is a City?
Year 1/2 mixed-age geography lesson pack – What is a city?
This Year 1/2 mixed-age geography lesson pack is part of our Glorious Geography scheme. It is designed for mixed-age classes, supporting pupils in Year 1 and Year 2 to learn together while building clear geographical understanding across KS1.
The scheme follows a two-year cycle. In Cycle A, all pupils study one set of blocks, and in Cycle B they move on to a different set. This avoids repetition and ensures full curriculum coverage.
Geography Scheme | Year 1/2 | Cycle A | Block 3: Why do They Live There? | Lesson 2: What is a city? is the second lesson in this block. Pupils explore what a city is, how it compares to other types of settlements and what makes it a place where people choose to live.
This lesson builds early understanding of human geography, helping the children recognise features of cities and begin to compare different environments.
Each lesson pack includes:
- An enquiry-based approach with opportunities to develop geographical understanding and fieldwork skills
- Comprehensive lesson plans with vocabulary, misconceptions, cross-curricular links, key questions and assessment opportunities
- Teacher knowledge and prior learning to support confident teaching
- Editable PowerPoints that model the learning
- Differentiated worksheets and activities
