SPaG Scheme Year 2 Summer Lesson 5: Write Sentences Using Subordinating Conjunctions (when, if, that, because)
Year 2 subordinating conjunctions worksheet and lesson pack
This Year 2 subordinating conjunctions worksheet and lesson pack helps pupils link ideas and add extra detail to their writing. Pupils learn how to write sentences using the subordinating conjunctions when, if, that and because, as outlined in the National Curriculum objective for sentence subordination.
Through clear modelling, teaching slides and structured practice, pupils build confidence in using subordinating conjunctions to join clauses and extend their sentences.
This lesson pack includes:
- Fully resourced teaching slides introducing subordinating conjunctions
- Modelled examples and opportunities for oral rehearsal
- Differentiated worksheets for writing sentences using subordinating conjunctions
- Grammar small step noted on each worksheet to support progression
By the end of the lesson, pupils will be confident using subordinating conjunctions to express time, cause and condition. This supports the development of longer, more detailed sentences and builds directly on previous work on co-ordination.
This builds on pupils’ understanding of co-ordinating conjunctions such as and, or and but, and prepares them for more complex sentence structures.
This lesson forms part of a structured sequence within our Year 2 SPaG scheme, where pupils move from simple sentence construction to more complex sentence structures.
Use as part of the Year 2 SPaG Summer Term scheme. For full planning support, download the lesson plans and progression overview.
