Wildfires and fire safety assembly for EYFS, KS1 and KS2

This wildfires and fire safety assembly helps pupils explore what fires from the past can teach us about preventing wildfires today. Using the Great Fire of London alongside present-day wildfire risks, pupils consider why fires happen and how rules, choices and individual responsibility can help keep people, wildlife and green spaces safe.

Designed for EYFS, KS1 and KS2, the resource can be used for a whole-school assembly, class assembly, PSHE or SMSC discussion, or classroom discussion. It is particularly relevant around the anniversary of the Great Fire of London in September, or when wildfires, dry weather and fire safety are in the news.

What can past fires teach us about preventing wildfires today?

Pupils look closely at the Great Fire of London and modern wildfires before considering different viewpoints about fire safety and prevention.

They vote on whether barbecues and outdoor fires should be banned in public parks during spells of hot, dry weather, giving reasons for their opinions and listening to alternative points of view. Pupils then take part in discussion and debate before revisiting their original vote and considering whether anything they have heard has changed their thinking.

The topic provides opportunities to explore fire prevention, the Countryside Code, the rule of law, individual liberty and responsible choices.

What’s included in the wildfires and fire safety assembly?

The topic pack includes ready-to-use assembly slides, a teacher guide, photo pack, age-appropriate word banks and discussion prompts, and follow-up activities for EYFS, KS1 and KS2.
