Reception Geography Lesson – Weather
This Reception geography lesson on weather is the first in EYFS Geography Block 2: What Is the Weather Like?. Children explore the natural world by observing the weather outdoors, learning and using new vocabulary, and recognising common weather symbols. They are encouraged to explain how they know what the weather is like, using evidence such as puddles, moving leaves or sunshine.

Teaching tip
Take children for a walk around the school grounds and ask them to describe the weather using the stem sentence: “The weather today is…”. Encourage them to give evidence for their ideas, such as noticing puddles for rain or trees moving in the wind. Display their drawings alongside a class vocabulary list to reinforce key concepts.

Literacy: writing weather words, captions or simple sentences. Maths: record daily weather alongside days of the week. PSHE: discuss how different weather types make us feel.
