Year 1 geography lesson – What are the features of a park?

This Year 1 geography lesson, part of our KS1 geography scheme, introduces pupils to human and physical features in a familiar environment. Children explore maps, photographs and digital tools to spot features in their local park, then classify them as human or physical. They also begin to use basic geographical vocabulary and directional language such as near, far, left and right.

What’s included?

  • A complete Year 1 park features PowerPoint for whole-class teaching.
  • Differentiated human and physical features worksheet to support varied abilities.
  • Photo pack of parks and local features.
  • Map-based activity using aerial views and simple symbols.

Learning outcomes

  • Identify human and physical features within a park.
  • Use maps and aerial photographs to locate and label features.
  • Begin to use geographical vocabulary and directional language.
  • Ask and answer simple enquiry questions about their local environment.

This lesson also connects to literacy, numeracy and science – from comparing park features in stories, to ordering them by size, or distinguishing living and non-living things:contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}.

Teaching tip

Take pupils on a walk to a local park if possible. Encourage them to talk about what they see, and discuss whether each feature is human or physical. Use construction or small-world play to let children create their own 3D map of the park for reinforcement.
