Science Scheme | Year 1 | Everyday Materials | Lesson 2: Where Do Materials Come From?
Help pupils build an early understanding of raw materials and their uses in this Year 1 science lesson on everyday materials. This is the second lesson in Block 2 of our Primary Science scheme of work, fully aligned with the national curriculum and informed by the Ofsted science subject report.
Pupils explore where materials come from – such as trees, rocks, sand and crude oil – and link these raw materials to the everyday objects they’re used to create. This hands-on lesson develops both vocabulary and disciplinary knowledge, helping children ask questions and make real-world connections.
Includes:
- Lesson plan with vocabulary, misconceptions, and assessment pointers
- Teacher slides with notes and engaging discussion points
- Differentiated worksheets for sorting and explaining materials
- Activity cards and guidance to support investigation and talk
This lesson supports progression from Year 1 Block 1: Seasonal Changes and prepares pupils for deeper learning in materials science throughout KS1.
