Year 2 transparency lesson: Opaque, translucent and transparent
This Year 2 transparency lesson teaches pupils how to identify and investigate materials that are transparent, translucent or opaque. Pupils use torches and simple tests to explore how light travels through different materials, then record their findings and explain what they notice. This lesson is part of our Year 2 Everyday Materials unit and supports working scientifically through observation and practical investigation.
Pupils also explore how materials can change, including an investigation where paper becomes translucent or transparent when oil is applied. They make predictions, test their ideas and discuss real-life uses of transparent and opaque materials.
