Science Scheme | Reception | Block 4: Plants and Growth | Lesson 6: Making Simple Records and Talking About Observations

Reception science lesson measuring plant growth and testing sycamore seed dispersal through observation and recording activities

Reception plants and growth lesson – making simple records and talking about observations

This Reception plants and growth lesson supports pupils in reviewing and recording everything they’ve learned about how plants grow. Children measure and describe their own plants, complete their growth logs, and explore seed dispersal using sycamore seed models.

The lesson encourages scientific discussion, observation and reflection. Pupils compare healthy and unhealthy plants, describe key features, and talk about the conditions that help plants grow well. They also test how seeds travel and practise recording their findings using simple vocabulary and measuring tools.

Resources include:

  • Interactive slides to recap the unit and support observation
  • Plant growth log and observation sheets
  • Sycamore seed template for a simple dispersal investigation
  • Lesson plan with teacher-led and continuous provision activities

This is Lesson 6 in our EYFS science scheme of work for Reception. It helps children build confidence in early science skills, including recording, comparing and explaining what they notice.
