Reception plants and growth lesson – performing simple tests and using equipment

This Reception plants and growth lesson helps children explore how scientists test and measure using real tools. Pupils observe, measure and compare natural materials like sticks, developing vocabulary and practical enquiry skills.

Linked to the enquiry skill of performing simple tests and using equipment, this hands-on lesson encourages pupils to ask questions, use magnifying glasses, rulers and scales, and begin describing what they notice with increasing accuracy.

Resources include:

  • Teaching slides with key vocabulary and example tools
  • ‘Comparing sticks’ worksheet with measuring and drawing tasks
  • Stick construction sheet for shape building and discussion
  • Lesson plan with teacher-led and continuous provision ideas

This is Lesson 3 in our EYFS science scheme of work for Reception. It supports early measurement, reasoning and recording using everyday classroom equipment.
