Reception plants and growth lesson – being curious and asking questions

This Reception plants and growth lesson encourages children to ask their own scientific questions about how and why plants grow. Pupils build curiosity and confidence through structured observation, discussion and imaginative thinking.

Focused on the enquiry skill of being curious and asking questions, this lesson includes outdoor walks, creative drawing tasks and prompts to help children notice unusual plant features and wonder about their purpose.

Resources include:

  • Interactive slides and ‘I wonder…’ discussion prompts
  • Plant part worksheet and growth observation log
  • Collaborative art activity imagining new plant types
  • Lesson plan with small group and continuous provision ideas

Part of our EYFS science scheme of work for Reception, this lesson helps children think deeply, ask questions, and talk about what they notice in the natural world.
