This Reception plant comparison lesson helps children explore how plants can be similar and different. Through observing real plants, discussing plant features and drawing what they see, children learn to identify common plant parts while noticing differences in size, shape, colour and structure.

Helping children compare and observe plants
Observation is an important scientific skill. In this lesson, children compare a range of plants, identify similarities and differences, and begin using vocabulary linked to plant parts and features. They learn that plants may look different from one another while still sharing common characteristics.
The activities support the Early Years Foundation Stage Understanding the World curriculum by encouraging children to observe the natural world, make comparisons and communicate what they notice through discussion and drawing.
