Reception different environments science lesson making simple records and talking about observations
This Reception different environments science lesson making simple records and talking about observations supports children to record what they see and talk about their findings using scientific vocabulary. Pupils explore different types of ground and suggest which living things might be found in each environment.
Using hands-on trays filled with sand, soil, rocks and water, children examine texture and moisture, then link this to habitats. They create collages, complete observation sheets, and describe their ideas using early scientific language.
This EYFS science lesson includes:
- Interactive slides comparing ground types and global habitats
- Observation worksheets for recording textures and materials
- Living things image cards for sorting and discussion
- Habitat collage templates with creative and scientific prompts
- Lesson plan with structured questioning and continuous provision ideas
This is Lesson 6 in our Reception science scheme of work, developed as part of the Scintillating Science programme.
