Reception science lesson on measuring trees

This Reception science lesson on measuring trees helps pupils carry out simple investigations using natural materials and outdoor environments. As part of the Different Environments unit, pupils explore how trees vary in size and learn how to compare and measure features using simple equipment.

Through practical outdoor activities, pupils measure tree trunks using string, compare results and discuss their findings using vocabulary such as longer, shorter, wider and narrower. They develop observation skills while learning more about the natural world around them.

Lesson includes

  • Interactive teaching slides introducing trees and outdoor investigations
  • Tree measuring worksheet and tree drawing activity
  • Outdoor observation tasks using natural objects and simple equipment
  • Complete Reception science lesson plan with vocabulary, assessment opportunities and questioning prompts
  • Practical investigations linked to measurement and comparison

Develop observation and investigation skills outdoors

This lesson encourages pupils to investigate, compare and discuss what they discover in outdoor environments. Through hands-on exploration and measurement activities, children develop early scientific enquiry skills while building their understanding of trees and natural habitats.
