Reception states of matter activities
This EYFS science lesson pack builds early disciplinary knowledge by encouraging pupils to observe, describe and sort materials by state. Pupils learn key vocabulary including solid, liquid, gas, melt, and change. They begin to understand that some materials can change state when heated or cooled.
EYFS areas of learning supported
- Understanding the World: Exploring materials and how they behave
- Communication and Language: Describing changes and using new vocabulary
- Mathematics: Comparing amounts, shapes and behaviour of substances
- Expressive Arts and Design: Using art to show what solids and liquids look like
This is part of our Reception science scheme of work. Download the full Reception solids, liquids and gases lesson pack to support early science teaching and introduce key concepts through play, talk and observation.
