Reception PSED intervention – Tilly and the Journey of Me week 6: The Land of the Brave

This Reception PSED intervention resource provides Week 6 of Tilly and the Journey of Me, a six-week FLIP intervention unit designed to support Reception pupils who require additional support with Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED).

Across the full six-week unit, pupils take part in short, structured sessions designed to support self-regulation, emotional development and social skills. Children join Tilly the teddy on a magical journey to different imaginative lands, using stories, discussion and guided activities to explore feelings, relationships and strategies for managing emotions.

This resource provides the complete final week of the intervention, with five short PSED sessions based around Tilly’s final destination, The Land of the Brave. The week’s key learning is to help pupils develop resilience and perseverance, begin to manage frustration and learn to cope appropriately with winning and losing.

What does Week 6 cover?

The five PSED sessions focus on:

  • The power of yet – understanding that learning new skills takes time, effort and perseverance, and using ‘yet’ to develop a positive approach to challenge.
  • Perseverance poster – exploring what children can say to themselves when something feels difficult and creating a shared poster of encouraging phrases.
  • Noughts and crosses – practising perseverance and learning to respond appropriately to winning and losing.
  • Target practice – taking turns, managing different outcomes and practising being a positive winner or loser.
  • Tallest towers – persevering when things go wrong, managing frustration and trying again following setbacks.

Using Week 6 as part of the Reception PSED intervention

Tilly and the Journey of Me is a structured six-week intervention rather than a collection of standalone activities. Each session is designed to take a maximum of 10 minutes and can be delivered 1:1, in pairs or in a small group.

Practitioners should continue to record observations using the Practitioner Notes and use these alongside the FLIP Identification and Progression Toolkit to monitor progress and inform appropriate next steps.

Week 6 marks the end of the intervention programme. Practitioners should review the evidence gathered across the six weeks alongside professional judgement to evaluate each child’s progress and decide whether targeted intervention is no longer required, a further cycle may be beneficial or additional support and monitoring should be considered.

This week forms part of the full Tilly and the Journey of Me six-week PSED intervention. You can also explore the wider FLIP Foundations for Learning Intervention Programme to find out more about identification, targeted intervention and progress monitoring.
