Reception PSED intervention – Tilly and the Journey of Me week 4: The Land of Friends

This Reception PSED intervention resource provides Week 4 of Tilly and the Journey of Me, a six-week FLIP intervention unit designed to support Reception pupils who require additional support with Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED).

Across the full six-week unit, pupils take part in short, structured sessions designed to support self-regulation, emotional development and social skills. Children join Tilly the teddy on a magical journey to different imaginative lands, using stories, discussion and guided activities to explore feelings, relationships and strategies for managing emotions.

This resource provides the complete fourth week of the intervention, with five short PSED sessions based around Tilly’s fourth destination, The Land of Friends. The week’s key learning is to help pupils understand what makes a good friend, show kindness and inclusion, take part in back-and-forth conversations and use language to build positive relationships.

What does Week 4 cover?

The five PSED sessions focus on:

  • You’re a star – identifying special people who help, care for, play with and support us.
  • Mirror me – working with a partner, watching carefully, copying actions and taking turns.
  • Helping hands – exploring ways to help friends and others in the classroom and completing a kindness mission.
  • Friendship building – working together, taking turns and using kind and encouraging language while completing a shared task.
  • Friendship bridge – cooperating as a group, sharing resources, including others and using kind words to achieve a shared goal.

Using Week 4 as part of the Reception PSED intervention

Tilly and the Journey of Me is a structured six-week intervention rather than a collection of standalone activities. Each session is designed to take a maximum of 10 minutes and can be delivered 1:1, in pairs or in a small group.

Practitioners should use the FLIP Identification and Progression Toolkit to help identify which pupils should take part and monitor their progress. Practitioner Notes can be used throughout the sessions to record observations and help inform appropriate next steps.

This week forms part of the full Tilly and the Journey of Me six-week PSED intervention. You can also explore the wider FLIP Foundations for Learning Intervention Programme to find out more about identification, targeted intervention and progress monitoring.
