Reception PSED intervention – Tilly and the Journey of Me week 3: The Land of Calm
This Reception PSED intervention resource provides Week 3 of Tilly and the Journey of Me, a six-week FLIP intervention unit designed to support Reception pupils who require additional support with Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED).
Across the full six-week unit, pupils take part in short, structured sessions designed to support self-regulation, emotional development and social skills. Children join Tilly the teddy on a magical journey to different imaginative lands, using stories, discussion and guided activities to explore feelings, relationships and strategies for managing emotions.
This resource provides the complete third week of the intervention, with five short PSED sessions based around Tilly’s third destination, The Land of Calm. The week’s key learning is to help pupils notice body signals, learn simple calming strategies and begin to regulate their behaviour with support.
What does Week 3 cover?
The five PSED sessions focus on:
- Mindful breathing – practising slow breathing using daisy and dandelion prompts to help the body feel calm and ready to learn.
- Starfish breathing – learning a simple breathing strategy to use when emotions feel big or difficult to manage.
- Mindful tracing – using tracing as a practical strategy for calming the body and mind.
- Musical marks – responding to calming music through mark making while practising relaxing the body and mind.
- Guided meditation – listening to a guided meditation and practising becoming calm, still and focused.
Using Week 3 as part of the Reception PSED intervention
Tilly and the Journey of Me is a structured six-week intervention rather than a collection of standalone activities. Each session is designed to take a maximum of 10 minutes and can be delivered 1:1, in pairs or in a small group.
Practitioners should use the FLIP Identification and Progression Toolkit to help identify which pupils should take part and monitor their progress. Practitioner Notes can be used throughout the sessions to record observations and help inform appropriate next steps.
Week 3 is also the mid-intervention assessment point. At the end of the week, practitioners should revisit the Progression Toolkit, review observations from the first three weeks and record any additional milestones achieved.
This week forms part of the full Tilly and the Journey of Me six-week PSED intervention. You can also explore the wider FLIP Foundations for Learning Intervention Programme.
