Tilly and the Journey of Me PSED Identification and Progression Toolkit

This PSED Identification and Progression Toolkit supports practitioners using Tilly and the Journey of Me, the six-week FLIP intervention for children entering Reception who require additional support with Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED).

The toolkit helps practitioners identify children who may benefit from targeted intervention, establish a baseline and track developmental progress throughout the six-week programme. Judgements are based on observations across natural contexts, including play, adult-led activities, social interactions and everyday routines.

What does the toolkit include?

The toolkit provides:

  • Baseline assessment guidance – helping practitioners establish each child’s starting point before intervention begins.
  • Age-related PSED developmental milestones – to support identification of children who may require additional help.
  • Ongoing assessment guidance – for recording milestones when there is clear and reliable evidence that they have been achieved.
  • Progress tracking – with baseline, mid-intervention and completion checks to show progress across the six weeks.

Using the toolkit

Practitioners should begin by observing the child across a range of situations and use professional judgement to identify the skills they can demonstrate consistently and independently. The toolkit can then be revisited throughout the intervention, with achieved milestones dated as progress is demonstrated.

The number of PSED milestones achieved is recorded at baseline, mid-intervention and completion, helping practitioners build a clear picture of progress and inform decisions about appropriate next steps.

Use this toolkit alongside the Tilly and the Journey of Me six-week PSED intervention and the wider FLIP Foundations for Learning Intervention Programme.
