Phase 5 Read and Colour Worksheets
Phase 5 phonics read and colour activity
Our Phase 5 Read and Colour worksheets help pupils practise reading words with alternative graphemes and more complex spellings. Captions such as “The blue bike has silver wheels” and “She had cream and red jam on a scone for her tea” encourage children to decode Phase 5 words in context, then colour the matching pictures to show understanding.
This activity combines decoding with comprehension and is ideal for building fluency as children move through Phase 5 phonics. The colouring element keeps pupils engaged while ensuring they carefully process each caption. Perfect for independent tasks, small groups or phonics interventions.
This resource is fully aligned with the updated 2021 Letters and Sounds progression and supports early reading development in the EYFS and KS1.
Teaching tip
Ask pupils to spot and highlight the Phase 5 graphemes before reading each caption aloud. This will draw attention to alternative spellings and help them apply their phonics knowledge more confidently.
