Our Phase 2 Read and Colour worksheets are designed to support early reading practice during Phase 2 phonics. Pupils read simple captions using Phase 2 decodable words, then colour the matching pictures to show their understanding. This helps children link phonics knowledge to meaning, develop decoding fluency, and check comprehension in a motivating way.

Each worksheet includes short captions such as “The top is red” or “The cat has a tan leg”, giving pupils the chance to practise blending and reading aloud before colouring to confirm what they’ve read. These activities are ideal for independent practice, guided reading, or phonics interventions.

This resource is fully aligned with the updated 2021 Letters and Sounds progression and supports early reading development in the EYFS and beyond.

Teaching tip

Encourage pupils to read each caption aloud twice before colouring, to build confidence and fluency. You can also ask them to underline the decodable words in each sentence before they begin.
