International Day of Peace assembly for EYFS, KS1 and KS2

This International Day of Peace assembly gives pupils the opportunity to explore what peace really means, how disagreements can be resolved and what can help people stop fighting and start talking instead. Designed for International Day of Peace on 21 September, pupils consider the big question: What can help people who disagree stop fighting and start talking instead?

Suitable for EYFS, KS1 and KS2, the resource can be used for a whole-school assembly, class assembly, PSHE or SMSC discussion, or a meaningful 15–25 minute classroom discussion.

What can help people stop fighting and start talking?

Pupils learn about the United Nations and International Day of Peace, explore a real-world example of a ceasefire and consider how listening, cooperation, negotiation and compromise can help people work towards peaceful solutions.

They vote on the question Is talking always better than fighting? before considering different viewpoints, exploring ways to build peace and taking part in a short debate. At the end, pupils vote again and consider whether anything they have heard has changed their thinking.

This primary peace assembly makes meaningful connections with British Values, SMSC, PSHE and oracy, including mutual respect and tolerance, individual liberty, listening to different viewpoints, managing disagreements and understanding how conflict can affect people and communities.

Voting, discussion and debate give pupils structured opportunities to form their own opinions, explain their reasoning, listen respectfully to different perspectives and reconsider their views.
