Consolidate children’s learning of the letter ‘y’ with these letter ‘y’ phonics and letter formation worksheets. The ‘y’ grapheme and /y/ phoneme are usually introduced in Phase 3 phonics, although some widely used systematic synthetic phonics programmes introduce ‘y’ during Phase 2. This flexible resource can therefore be used alongside your school’s chosen phonics programme whenever ‘y’ is taught.

This 7-page letter ‘y’ worksheet pack includes finger-tracing and letter-formation practice, activities for finding and recognising the letter ‘y’, identifying pictures beginning with ‘y’, handwriting practice on lined guides, and a consolidation sheet combining letter recognition, tracing, initial sounds, early reading and writing. The tracing and formation activities also support pencil control and the fine motor skills children need for early handwriting.

These letter ‘y’ worksheets are ideal for consolidating a newly taught grapheme. Use them as an adult-led Reception focus task, for independent phonics practice, in a writing or phonics continuous-provision area, or with children who would benefit from revisiting letter recognition and formation.

Using the resources for progressive letter formation
