Reinforce early Phase 2 phonics while helping children learn to form lowercase ‘s’ correctly with these letter ‘s’ phonics and letter formation worksheets for Reception. The activities give children repeated opportunities to recognise the ‘s’ grapheme, hear and identify the /s/ phoneme, and practise the curved movement needed to form the letter accurately.

This 7-page letter ‘s’ worksheet pack combines phonics, grapheme recognition and handwriting practice. Children begin by finger-tracing a large ‘s’ and following the correct formation direction before tracing letters in different sizes and practising on handwriting lines. They also find ‘s’ amongst other letters and identify pictures beginning with /s/.

Further activities encourage children to apply their grapheme recognition by spotting ‘s’ within simple text. A final consolidation sheet brings together initial-sound identification, lowercase and uppercase letter recognition, letter tracing and word tracing with words including set, so, said and hiss.

The ‘s’ grapheme and /s/ phoneme are introduced near the beginning of Phase 2 phonics. These worksheets are ideal for consolidating ‘s’ after it has been taught, giving children additional practice connecting the phoneme they hear with the grapheme they recognise, read and write. Use them during Reception phonics or handwriting sessions, for adult-led focus work, independent activities, continuous provision or targeted support.
