Develop children’s confidence forming lowercase ‘p’ with these letter ‘p’ formation worksheets for Reception. Children begin by finger-tracing the letter and following the correct formation direction before moving on to tracing smaller letters and practising ‘p’ on handwriting lines.

This 7-page letter ‘p’ formation and handwriting pack combines focused formation practice with letter recognition and early phonics activities. Children trace ‘p’ in different sizes, find it amongst other letters, identify pictures beginning with /p/, practise on handwriting lines and spot the grapheme within simple text. A final consolidation activity brings together letter tracing, word tracing, initial sounds and visual letter recognition.

The activities provide useful practice for children learning to recognise the distinctive shape and orientation of lowercase ‘p’, including distinguishing it from visually similar letters such as ‘b’, ‘d’ and ‘q’. Repeated tracing and handwriting practice helps children become more familiar with the movement needed to form ‘p’ accurately and consistently.

Use these letter ‘p’ worksheets during Reception handwriting sessions, alongside phonics teaching, as a focused adult-led activity, within continuous provision or for children who need additional letter formation practice. The ‘p’ grapheme and /p/ phoneme are introduced during Phase 2 phonics, making the pack useful for reinforcing the connection between the letter shape and its corresponding sound.
