Consolidate the ‘d’ grapheme and /d/ phoneme while building secure letter formation with these letter ‘d’ phonics and letter formation worksheets for Reception. The activities combine Phase 2 phonics with tracing, handwriting, initial-sound work and grapheme recognition, helping children become confident recognising, reading and forming the letter ‘d’.

This 7-page letter ‘d’ worksheet pack begins with large finger-tracing and guided formation activities before progressing to smaller letter tracing and handwriting-line practice. Children also find the ‘d’ grapheme amongst other letters, identify pictures beginning with /d/ and spot ‘d’ within simple text, strengthening the connection between the /d/ phoneme and its written representation.

The varied activities give children repeated opportunities to look closely at the shape and orientation of lowercase ‘d’, which can be particularly helpful when distinguishing it from other letter shapes. A final consolidation activity combines initial sounds, lowercase and uppercase letter recognition, letter tracing and words including dip, den, deep and did.

The ‘d’ grapheme and /d/ phoneme are introduced during Phase 2 phonics. Use these worksheets after teaching ‘d’ to consolidate phonics learning, during Reception handwriting or letter formation sessions, as an adult-led focus activity, for independent practice, within continuous provision or for additional support.
