Help children develop accurate letter formation with these letter ‘b’ formation worksheets for Reception. The activities provide repeated practice forming lowercase ‘b’, beginning with large finger-tracing movements before progressing to tracing, handwriting-line practice and more independent recognition of the letter shape.

This 7-page letter ‘b’ formation and handwriting pack combines letter tracing with activities that help children recognise ‘b’ amongst other letters, connect the grapheme with the /b/ phoneme and identify pictures beginning with ‘b’. Children also find ‘b’ within simple text and complete a consolidation activity combining letter formation, letter recognition, initial sounds and word tracing.

The varied activities make the pack useful for letter formation practice in Reception, particularly when children need repeated opportunities to become familiar with the shape and orientation of lowercase ‘b’. Use the worksheets during handwriting sessions, alongside Phase 2 phonics teaching, as an adult-led focus activity, within continuous provision, or for additional practice with letter recognition and formation.

The ‘b’ grapheme and /b/ phoneme are taught during Phase 2 phonics, so the pack can also be used to consolidate phonics learning once ‘b’ has been introduced.

Using the resources for progressive letter formation

The individual letter packs can be used in any order to fit your existing phonics or handwriting teaching. If you would like to work through the lowercase letters progressively, we suggest introducing them in the following groups:

  3. c, o, a, d, g, q, s, f, e
