Letter ‘a’ worksheets | Phase 2 phonics and letter formation
Consolidate children’s recognition of the ‘a’ grapheme and /a/ phoneme while developing accurate letter formation with these letter ‘a’ phonics and letter formation worksheets for Reception. Combining Phase 2 phonics with tracing, handwriting and grapheme-recognition activities, the pack helps children make the important connection between the sound they hear, the grapheme they recognise and the letter they form.
The 7-page letter ‘a’ worksheet pack begins with large finger-tracing and guided formation before children move on to tracing letters in different sizes and practising ‘a’ on handwriting lines. Phonics activities include finding the ‘a’ grapheme amongst other letters, identifying pictures beginning with /a/ and spotting ‘a’ within simple text.
Children then bring these skills together in a consolidation activity involving initial sounds, letter tracing, word tracing and grapheme recognition. This varied approach provides repeated opportunities to recognise, read and form the letter ‘a’, while also developing pencil control and confidence with early handwriting.
The ‘a’ grapheme and /a/ phoneme are introduced near the beginning of Phase 2 phonics. Use these worksheets to consolidate ‘a’ after it has been taught, during Reception phonics or handwriting sessions, as an adult-led focus activity, for independent practice, within continuous provision or for additional support.
