Year 1 Geography Lesson – Comparing Cardiff and Our Local Area
This Year 1 geography lesson, part of our KS1 geography scheme of work, helps pupils explore similarities and differences between Cardiff and their local area. Children use maps, photographs, and discussion to compare human and physical features, transport, and everyday life.
Through hands-on enquiry, pupils will:
- Identify and name features in both Cardiff and their own locality.
- Record comparisons on a chart or split poster.
- Discuss how life might change if they moved to Cardiff.
- Use geographical vocabulary such as city, urban, rural, and transport.
This lesson includes a differentiated worksheet, local area and Cardiff photo packs, plus guidance for continuous provision activities. It supports National Curriculum objectives for place knowledge and develops early fieldwork skills.
Our Glorious Geography scheme is Highly Commended by the Geographical Association, making it a trusted choice for high-quality teaching and learning.
