Nursery I see 1, 2, 3 subitising activities

Develop early number sense with this Nursery I See 1, 2, 3 maths lesson pack. The children learn to notice small quantities and begin to recognise 1, 2 and 3 without needing to count each object individually.

Across the six lessons, the children develop their noticing skills through stories, pictures and the Nursery environment before being introduced to subitising to 3. Adult modelling helps the children recognise small quantities at a glance, use language such as I see 1, 2 or 3, and gradually become more confident identifying quantities independently.

The six lessons are designed to be taught flexibly over approximately two weeks, with around three lessons each week. This allows time for the children to revisit their learning through continuous provision and everyday routines, and works well in Nursery settings where children may attend on different days.

The learning is reinforced through familiar stories, dice, practical games and opportunities to spot groups of 1, 2 and 3 around the setting. By the end of the sequence, the children are encouraged to use their fast eyes to recognise small quantities without counting and apply this understanding more independently.
