EYFS Geography Lesson – Where Can We Go on Holiday?
This Reception geography lesson encourages children to reflect on different environments and think about places they might like to visit. Pupils consider EYFS holiday destinations such as the seaside, countryside, mountains or city, and discuss how these places are similar or different to where they live.
Through photographs, maps and role play, pupils compare contrasting environments and talk about what makes them special. They use new geographical vocabulary to describe features such as beaches, parks, forests, airports and harbours, while developing early map skills to identify holiday locations.
Included in this lesson pack:
- Editable EYFS geography PowerPoint introducing holiday places
- Photopack and activity sheets for comparing environments
- Teacher guidance with misconceptions, vocabulary and assessment prompts
- Continuous provision ideas such as role play travel agents or small world airports
- Cross-curricular links with literacy, PSHE and art
This lesson supports EYFS outcomes including recognising environments that are different from their own, describing what they see, hear and feel, and articulating preferences in full sentences. It also encourages discussion about journeys, travel and places that are special to families.
Teaching tip
Set up a simple holiday role play area with suitcases, tickets and maps. Encourage children to choose where they would like to go and explain why, e.g. “I want to go to the beach because I like building sandcastles.” Use this to reinforce EYFS seasonal changes and climate differences in different holiday locations.
This lesson completes EYFS Geography Block 3: What Can We Explore? – Highly Commended by the Geographical Association – within our full primary geography scheme of work for EYFS, KS1 and KS2.
