Geography Scheme | Reception | Block 3: What Can we Explore? | Lesson 5: Let’s Explore the Seasons

EYFS Geography Lesson – Let’s Explore the Seasons

This Reception geography seasons lesson introduces children to the four seasons and helps them understand how places change throughout the year. Pupils explore EYFS seasonal changes by identifying features of spring, summer, autumn and winter using photographs, maps and real-life observations.

Through discussion, sorting tasks and creative activities, children practise using new seasonal vocabulary, compare the same place at different times of year, and explore how weather, plants and people’s activities change across the seasons. Continuous provision extends learning with role play, artwork and outdoor exploration.

Included in this lesson pack:

  • Editable EYFS geography PowerPoint introducing the four seasons
  • Photopack showing contrasting seasonal scenes
  • Sorting activities for clothing, weather and seasonal features
  • Teacher guidance with misconceptions, key questions and vocabulary
  • Cross-curricular links with science, literacy, PE and music

This lesson supports EYFS outcomes such as recognising seasonal changes, describing what they see and feel outdoors, and explaining differences between environments. It also encourages children to use talk to organise their thinking and express ideas in sentences.

Teaching tip

Take children outside across the term to observe seasonal changes in EYFS. Collect autumn leaves, notice frost in winter, or discuss sunny days in summer. Encourage pupils to describe what they see using vocabulary like sunny, cloudy, frosty and blooming. Display a seasons chart in class to track changes together.
