EYFS Geography Lesson – Can We Find a Beach?
This Reception geography lesson introduces pupils to beach environments and their key features. Using photographs, maps and role play, children learn to recognise beaches, describe what they see, and begin to identify features such as sand, pebbles, waves, cliffs, sand dunes and rockpools.
Pupils use digital mapping to locate the nearest beach, explore photographs of UK coastlines, and compare beaches to other environments. Through hands-on activities, they build their own beach scenes, label features, and use new vocabulary in context. Continuous provision ideas extend learning with role play, sorting, and map-based challenges.
Included in this lesson pack:
- Editable EYFS geography PowerPoint with beach photos and video
- Photopack and worksheets for identifying beach features
- Teacher guidance with vocabulary, misconceptions and key questions
- Continuous provision activities including tuff tray beach building
- Cross-curricular literacy, numeracy and art links
This lesson supports EYFS outcomes such as recognising environments different from their own, drawing information from simple maps, and using new vocabulary in different contexts. Misconceptions are addressed, including the idea that all beaches are sandy or always look the same.
Part of our EYFS Geography Block 3: What Can We Explore? unit – Highly Commended by the Geographical Association.
