Geography Scheme | Reception | Block 3: What Can we Explore? | Lesson 2: Where do People Work?

EYFS Geography Lesson – Where Do People Work?

This Reception geography lesson helps children explore the world of work in their local community. Pupils identify different professions such as shop workers, doctors, firefighters and gardeners, and match them to the places where they work using photographs, maps and role play.

Through discussion, worksheets and practical activities, pupils learn that people in the community have different jobs and workplaces. They also develop early map skills by locating workplaces on a simple map of the local area. Role play and small world resources provide opportunities to act out professions and think about how people travel to work.

Included in this lesson pack:

  • Editable EYFS geography PowerPoint with photographs of professions and workplaces
  • Differentiated worksheet for matching jobs to workplaces
  • Teacher guidance with vocabulary, misconceptions and key questions
  • Continuous provision ideas, including role play and small world
  • Cross-curricular literacy and DT links

This lesson supports EYFS outcomes such as naming and describing people who are familiar to them, talking about community roles, using new vocabulary in context, and drawing information from a map.

Part of our EYFS Geography Block 3: What Can We Explore? unit – Highly Commended by the Geographical Association.
