EYFS Geography Lesson – Where Can We Go Today?
This Reception geography lesson introduces pupils to local places and helps them develop early map skills. Using simple maps and photographs, children identify different places in their community such as the library, park, post office or place of worship. They then mark these locations on a map using symbols and explain why they would like to visit them.
Through discussion, role play and hands-on activities, pupils learn to describe their environment, make observations and practise positional language. The lesson also encourages awareness of community places and how they are used by different people.
Included in this lesson pack:
- Editable EYFS geography PowerPoint introducing maps and local places
- Optional worksheet and map symbols for children to use
- Teacher guidance with vocabulary, key questions and misconceptions
- Cross-curricular literacy and numeracy ideas
- Differentiated activities and continuous provision suggestions
This lesson supports EYFS outcomes including drawing information from a simple map, understanding that some places are special to members of the community, and describing what they see and hear whilst outside.
