Reception Maths Summer Week 8: Shape, Position and Direction
Help pupils build strong early geometry skills with this Reception shape and direction activities pack. In Week 8 of the EYFS maths scheme of work, children develop their spatial reasoning by identifying, copying and extending repeating patterns using real objects, actions, and sounds. They also explore position and direction vocabulary through practical, hands-on tasks.
This week’s lessons are designed to support logical thinking, mathematical talk and the ability to describe patterns and movement – all key skills for Reception and beyond.
Lesson coverage
- Lesson 1 – Identify pattern rules: Pupils explore simple repeating patterns using colours and movements, describing the unit of repeat.
- Lesson 2 – Copy and continue patterns: Children complete visual patterns using pattern matching activities and practical maths games.
- Lesson 3 – Create patterns: Pupils make their own repeating patterns with small parts, toys and natural materials, describing their choices.

- Lesson 5 – Consolidation: A review session packed with pattern games for Reception and shape-based problem solving.
Resource pack includes:
- 5-day lesson plan with EYFS shape and direction vocabulary, key questions, and suggested continuous provision
- Reception maths PowerPoint slides to support teaching each lesson
- Differentiated EYFS pattern and position worksheets for varied ability levels
