Nursery maths lesson pack: Exploring first patterns | Spring term

Support early pattern awareness with this nursery maths lesson pack on exploring first patterns, aligned with the EYFS maths framework and White Rose progression. Part of the Spring term scheme, this unit helps the children notice, copy and continue simple repeating patterns through movement, songs and practical play.

Across the six small steps, the children explore patterns using natural materials, everyday objects and small-world play. They begin to spot simple AB patterns, copy repeating sequences and talk about what comes next.

Through structured activities and purposeful play, the children develop confidence in recognising and creating patterns, supporting early mathematical thinking and language.
