Autumn spelling progression

The Year 3 Autumn spelling strand introduces new statutory spelling patterns while consolidating prior learning. Across the term, pupils learn and apply:

  • Year 2 suffix rules, including words ending in -y or -e and doubled consonants
  • Split digraph words and alternative ai spellings
  • The short /i/ sound spelt y and the short /oo/ sound spelt ou
  • Common homophones
  • Statutory Year 3 and 4 spelling list words, with regular consolidation and review weeks

Weekly Spelling Rules PowerPoints, handwriting practice, Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check activities, dictation tasks and spelling tests provide regular opportunities for pupils to revisit, practise and apply each spelling pattern. The spelling sequence complements the Autumn grammar curriculum, helping pupils transfer accurate spelling into their everyday writing.
