Year 1 Science Block 1: Seasonal Changes

Year 1 science – Seasonal Changes and Weather

This Year 1 seasonal changes unit helps pupils explore weather patterns, the four seasons and changes across the year through practical observation and scientific enquiry. Across six engaging lessons, pupils learn how weather changes throughout the seasons while developing early skills in measuring, recording and interpreting data.

Aligned with the National Curriculum, the unit encourages pupils to observe changes over time, ask simple scientific questions and begin recognising patterns in weather and daylight. Lessons include opportunities for discussion, outdoor observation and hands-on investigation to support meaningful science learning.

Part of our comprehensive Scintillating Science scheme, this unit includes lesson plans, interactive teaching slides, differentiated worksheets, assessment materials and vocabulary support to help teachers deliver confident Year 1 science lessons.

What this Year 1 seasonal changes unit covers

This Year 1 science unit helps pupils develop understanding of weather patterns, seasonal change and how conditions vary throughout the year. Through practical observation and simple scientific enquiry, pupils learn to describe weather, recognise seasonal features and begin measuring and recording changes over time.

Lessons encourage pupils to explore the world around them through discussion, outdoor learning and weather investigations. Pupils develop confidence with scientific vocabulary while building early working scientifically skills such as observing closely, gathering simple data and identifying patterns.

The unit fits flexibly into different curriculum structures and typically works within a 45-60 minute science lesson. This unit forms part of our wider Scintillating Science scheme, supporting progression from EYFS science through to KS1 science.
