Reception Science Block 6: Mini Scientists

Reception science – Mini-Scientists

Our Reception science mini scientists unit helps pupils apply and consolidate the scientific enquiry skills developed throughout Reception through practical investigations, real-world challenges and purposeful problem-solving. Part of the Scintillating Science scheme, this engaging EYFS science unit encourages children to think and work like scientists while building confidence before Year 1.

Designed around the disciplinary knowledge pupils need for Year 1 science and beyond, the unit revisits all key working scientifically skills introduced across the Reception science scheme, including observing closely, asking questions, performing simple tests, noticing changes and talking about observations. Children apply these skills through hands-on investigations linked to bread making, inventions, camouflage, shelter and keeping warm.

Aligned with the EYFS Framework and Understanding the World, the unit helps pupils explore how science helps people and animals solve problems in the real world. Practical investigations encourage children to make predictions, test ideas, explain outcomes and reflect on their observations using scientific vocabulary.

The unit includes detailed lesson planning, interactive teaching slides, differentiated activity sheets, knowledge organisers and assessment opportunities. Lessons combine short whole-class carpet inputs with practical adult-led and independent activities designed to encourage curiosity, collaboration and scientific thinking.

We recommend teaching this unit at the end of Reception, as it draws together the knowledge and enquiry skills developed across the other Reception science units while helping prepare pupils for the transition into Year 1 science.

Reception science mini scientists lesson plans and resources

Teach Reception science mini scientists through practical investigations and real-world challenges that help pupils apply the scientific enquiry skills developed across Reception. Children explore how science helps people and animals solve problems through activities linked to inventions, shelter, camouflage, bread making and keeping warm.

Aligned with the EYFS Framework, this unit supports Understanding the World through observation, prediction, testing and discussion. Designed as a transition unit into Year 1 science, Mini-Scientists revisits all key working scientifically skills from the wider Reception science scheme in meaningful and engaging contexts.
