Phase 2 Phonics

Phase 2 phonics worksheets and activities for Reception (EYFS)

Looking for Phase 2 phonics worksheets, games and activities for Reception? Our Phase 2 phonics resources support early blending, segmenting and phoneme recognition as pupils begin learning their first graphemes (GPCs).

This collection includes Phase 2 phonics worksheets, decodable word cards, fine motor activities and lesson resources to support confident early reading and spelling.

What is taught in Phase 2 phonics?

Phase 2 introduces pupils to the first 23 graphemes (GPCs), taught in sets. Teaching begins with the most common single-letter spellings and progresses to early double-letter spellings such as ck, ff, ll and ss.

Pupils learn to blend and segment simple CVC words, recognise letter-sound correspondences, and begin reading and writing short words and captions.

Phase 2 phonics worksheets, CVC words and activities

Our Phase 2 phonics worksheets and activities are designed for structured teaching across the week. You’ll find resources to support:

  • early blending and segmenting with CVC words
  • grapheme recognition and sound recall
  • decodable reading practise using Phase 2 words
  • fine motor and early letter formation alongside phonics teaching

For an engaging decoding task, try our Phase 2 read and colour activity, ideal for applying new sounds in context.

If you want focused reading practise, our Phase 2 decodable word cards help pupils blend and read words linked to the teaching sequence.

Fine motor and letter formation in Phase 2

Phase 2 phonics often overlaps with early writing development. We include resources that support correct letter formation and fine motor control alongside sound learning.

Our fine motor letter formation worksheets provide structured practise for pupils who are beginning to form letters confidently.

For an engaging hands-on activity, explore our Phase 2 cutting caterpillars activity, which supports sound recognition alongside early fine motor development.

CVC word blending and spelling support

CVC word practise is a key focus in Phase 2. Use our CVC phoneme frame to help pupils segment sounds and spell simple words accurately.

Phase 2 lesson resources

If you want a clear whole-class input to introduce the first sounds, our Phase 2 lesson presentation (s, a, t, p) supports structured teaching and guided practise.
