Year 6 Spring Block 4: Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Spring Block 4: Fractions, decimals and percentages (Year 6)

This Year 6 fractions, decimals and percentages unit helps pupils make secure connections between different ways of representing numbers. Aligned with White Rose Maths and the Year 6 National Curriculum, the block develops fluency when converting, comparing and calculating with fractions, decimals and percentages.

Across the unit, pupils find equivalent fractions and decimals, explore fractions as division, convert between fractions, decimals and percentages, compare and order values, calculate percentages of amounts and find whole amounts from percentages. The sequence builds both conceptual understanding and problem-solving confidence while preparing pupils for upper Key Stage 2 assessments and future mathematical study.

Resources are organised into comprehensive lesson packs containing detailed lesson plans, interactive teaching slides, differentiated worksheets and supporting activities. Assessment materials, revision resources and knowledge organisers are included to support progression and secure understanding throughout the block.

Week 7 small steps

  • Find equivalent decimals and fractions
  • Explore fractions as division
  • Understand percentages
  • Convert fractions to percentages
  • Find equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages

Week 8 small steps

  • Order fractions, decimals and percentages
  • Find a percentage of an amount (one step)
  • Find a percentage of an amount (multi-step)
  • Find a whole number from a percentage
  • Assessment

National Curriculum objectives

  • Use common factors to simplify fractions and common multiples to express fractions in the same denomination
  • Associate a fraction with division and calculate decimal fraction equivalents
  • Recall and use equivalences between fractions, decimals and percentages

Connecting fractions, decimals and percentages in Year 6

This Year 6 fractions, decimals and percentages block helps pupils recognise and use equivalence between different number representations. Through carefully sequenced lessons, pupils develop confidence when converting between fractions, decimals and percentages and applying these skills to increasingly challenging mathematical problems.

The unit moves from equivalent fractions and decimals through to percentage calculations and percentage problem-solving. Pupils learn efficient methods for comparing values, calculating percentages of amounts and finding whole amounts from percentage information, strengthening mathematical reasoning and number fluency.
