This Year 6 decimals unit develops pupils’ confidence when reading, comparing, calculating and reasoning with decimals to three decimal places. Aligned with White Rose Maths and the Year 6 National Curriculum, the block covers place value, rounding, the four operations with decimals and multiplying and dividing by powers of ten.
Across the unit, pupils explore decimals less than one and greater than one, round decimals to different degrees of accuracy, add and subtract decimals, multiply and divide decimals by powers of ten, and calculate with decimals in a range of mathematical and real-life contexts. The sequence develops fluency alongside reasoning and problem-solving, helping pupils apply decimal understanding confidently across the wider maths curriculum.

This Year 6 decimals block helps pupils develop a secure understanding of decimal place value and calculation. Through carefully sequenced lessons, pupils learn to read, compare, round and calculate with decimals while applying their understanding to increasingly complex mathematical problems.
