This block strengthens pupils’ understanding of fractions through simplifying, comparing, ordering, and calculating with fractions. It introduces efficient strategies for finding equivalent fractions, using highest common factors and lowest common multiples, and supports the transition from visual models to abstract reasoning.

Aligned with the White Rose Maths small steps, these lessons build the skills needed for confident fraction fluency. Each lesson pack includes differentiated worksheets, interactive slides and lesson plans that guide pupils from finding equivalent fractions to adding and subtracting fractions with related denominators.

White Rose Small Steps
  • Identify equivalent fractions and simplify fractions
  • Use number lines to find equivalent fractions
  • Compare and order fractions by denominator
  • Compare and order fractions by numerator
  • Add and subtract simple fractions
National Curriculum Objectives
  • Compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number
  • Identify, name and write equivalent fractions of a given fraction, represented visually
  • Recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert between them
  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and denominators that are multiples of the same number

Year 6 fractions

Our Year 6 fractions resources help pupils move beyond basic equivalence to more complex fraction reasoning. Pupils simplify, compare and calculate with fractions while developing a strong understanding of how to use common factors and multiples to work efficiently.

Each lesson supports mastery with visual models, clear examples and reasoning questions that encourage pupils to explain their thinking. The activities are designed to consolidate prior learning from Year 5 and extend it into more formal written methods.

What’s included in each lesson pack?

  • Year 6 fractions PowerPoints for every small step
  • Differentiated worksheets with fluency, reasoning and problem-solving tasks
  • Lesson plans with teaching guidance and assessment notes
  • Challenge sheets for greater depth understanding
  • Visual representations and key vocabulary prompts

Curriculum focus

  • Identify and simplify equivalent fractions using the highest common factor
  • Compare and order fractions using common denominators or numerators
  • Add and subtract fractions with related denominators
  • Use number lines and bar models to represent and reason with fractions
  • Build efficiency and accuracy with formal fraction methods

If you’re following the White Rose Maths scheme, our Year 6 fractions resources cover all small steps for Autumn Block 3. Each pack provides a complete lesson with differentiated support, ensuring pupils are well prepared for upper Key Stage 2 expectations.
