Year 6 Autumn Block 4 (Fractions - Calculations)

Year 6 Maths – Autumn Block 4: Fractions (Calculations)

Download our free Year 6 maths overview. Explore maths subject leader resources.

This block develops pupils’ understanding of fraction calculations through a clear sequence of lessons covering multiplication, division, finding fractions of amounts and solving multi-step problems. Pupils build confidence using bar models to explain their methods, justify their choices and sense-check whether an answer should be larger or smaller than the starting value. Lessons begin with efficient strategies for multiplying fractions by integers and by other fractions, before moving on to dividing unit and non-unit fractions using both equivalent multiplications and the unitising method, as shown in the weekly plans.

As the block progresses, pupils learn how to calculate fractions of amounts, find the whole when given a fractional part, and solve contextual problems involving mixed numbers and improper fractions. The teaching sequence includes opportunities to compare strategies, select the most efficient method, and explore common misconceptions such as dividing the denominator instead of the numerator, all highlighted in the Week 11 plan.

Aligned with the White Rose Maths small steps, each lesson pack includes differentiated worksheets, PowerPoints and detailed lesson plans, supporting pupils to develop secure fluency, accuracy and reasoning across increasingly complex calculations.

White Rose Small Steps
  • Multiply fractions by integers
  • Multiply fractions by fractions
  • Divide a unit fraction by an integer
  • Divide any fraction by an integer
  • Solve mixed questions with fractions
  • Find a fraction of an amount
  • Find the whole amount
  • End-of-block assessment and consolidation
National Curriculum Objectives
  • Add and subtract fractions with different denominators and mixed numbers, using the concept of equivalent fractions
  • Multiply simple pairs of proper fractions, writing the answer in its simplest form
  • Multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers
  • Divide proper fractions by whole numbers
  • Solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Associate a fraction with division

Year 6 Autumn Block 4: Fractions (Calculations)

Year 6 Autumn Block 4 focuses on developing secure fluency and reasoning across all key fraction calculations. The lesson packs follow the White Rose Maths small steps and support pupils in multiplying and dividing fractions, working with mixed numbers, and applying their knowledge in multi-step problems. Each sequence includes clear modelling, bar representations and carefully structured examples that help pupils choose efficient methods and explain their thinking.

What pupils learn in this block

  • Multiply fractions by integers and mixed numbers using repeated addition and conversion methods
  • Multiply pairs of fractions and simplify answers
  • Divide unit and non-unit fractions by whole numbers using equivalent multiplication and unitising
  • Find fractions of amounts and calculate the whole when a fractional part is known
  • Solve multi-step problems involving all four operations with fractions
  • Explain errors, compare strategies and reason about the size of answers

What’s included in the Year 6 Fractions (Calculations) packs?

  • Differentiated Year 6 worksheets for fluency, reasoning and problem-solving
  • Detailed lesson plans with clear modelling and key questions
  • Interactive slides aligned with the progression of the block
  • Assessment for the end of the block, plus consolidation materials

The full set of resources gives pupils repeated opportunities to practise efficient methods, build confidence with trickier calculations and refine their reasoning. Teachers can track progression across the block, revisit misconceptions and support pupils in preparing securely for upper Key Stage 2 fraction expectations.
