Year 5 Summer Block 4: Negative Numbers

Summer Block 4: Negative numbers (Year 5)

This Year 5 negative numbers unit introduces pupils to working confidently with positive and negative integers in real-life contexts. Aligned with White Rose Maths and the Year 5 National Curriculum, the block develops understanding of negative numbers, counting through zero and comparing values above and below zero.

Across the unit, pupils interpret negative numbers in contexts such as temperature, height and depth, count forwards and backwards through zero, compare and order positive and negative numbers, and find the difference between values on number lines and in real-world situations. The sequence develops number sense while strengthening reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Resources are organised into comprehensive lesson packs containing detailed lesson plans, interactive teaching slides, differentiated worksheets and supporting activities. Assessment materials, revision resources and knowledge organisers are included to support progression and secure understanding throughout the block.

Week 9 small steps

  • Understand negative numbers
  • Count through zero in ones
  • Count through zero in multiples
  • Compare and order negative numbers
  • Find the difference between positive and negative numbers

National Curriculum objectives

  • Interpret negative numbers in context
  • Count forwards and backwards with positive and negative whole numbers, including through zero
  • Compare and order positive and negative integers
  • Use negative numbers in practical contexts such as temperature, height and depth
  • Find the difference between positive and negative values

Developing understanding of negative numbers in Year 5

This Year 5 negative numbers block helps pupils understand how numbers can be used to represent values above and below zero. Through practical contexts such as temperatures, sea levels and building floors, pupils develop confidence when interpreting, comparing and calculating with negative numbers.

The unit progresses from recognising and interpreting negative numbers to counting through zero in ones and multiples, comparing and ordering integers, and finding the difference between positive and negative values. These skills strengthen number sense and prepare pupils for more advanced work with directed numbers in Key Stage 3.
