This Year 5 decimals block helps pupils develop confidence when adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals. Aligned with the White Rose small steps, pupils begin by using known facts to add and subtract decimals within 1 before progressing to complements to 1 and calculations that cross whole numbers.

Throughout the unit, pupils build fluency using formal written methods for decimal addition and subtraction, including calculations with different numbers of decimal places. The block also develops understanding of decimal sequences and place value through multiplying and dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1,000. Reasoning and problem-solving opportunities are included throughout to strengthen mathematical understanding and prepare pupils for KS2 SATs-style questions.
