This Year 5 shape unit develops pupils’ understanding of angles, geometric reasoning, polygons and 3D shapes. Across the unit, pupils measure and compare angles, draw angles accurately using a protractor, calculate missing angles around a point and on a straight line, find lengths and angles in shapes, explore regular and irregular polygons and identify the properties of 3D shapes. The sequence develops geometric fluency while strengthening reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Developing geometric reasoning and shape knowledge in Year 5
