Year 5 Spring Block 5 (Statistics)

Year 5 Maths – Spring Block 5: Statistics

Download our free Year 5 maths overview. Explore year 5 spring maths blocks.

This block develops pupils’ understanding of statistics through interpreting, presenting and analysing data in a range of formats. Pupils begin by drawing and reading line graphs, building on prior knowledge to work with different scales, intervals and contexts.

As the unit progresses, pupils interpret tables, including two-way tables, and learn to extract, compare and analyse information efficiently. They also explore timetables as a practical application of data handling. Reasoning and problem-solving tasks are embedded throughout to support pupils in explaining their thinking, making comparisons and drawing conclusions from data.

White Rose small steps
  • Draw line graphs
  • Read and interpret line graphs
  • Read and interpret tables
  • Two-way tables
  • Read and interpret timetables
National Curriculum objectives
  • Solve comparison, sum and difference problems using information presented in line graphs
  • Complete, read and interpret information in tables, including timetables

Year 5 statistics resources (Spring Block 5)

Our Year 5 statistics resources for Spring Block 5 follow the White Rose small steps, with a clear progression from drawing line graphs to interpreting more complex data in tables and timetables. Pupils develop confidence in reading scales, choosing appropriate intervals and making accurate interpretations from data.

What’s included in each lesson pack

Each lesson includes teaching slides, differentiated worksheets and structured reasoning and problem-solving tasks, helping pupils move beyond simple data reading to explaining patterns, comparisons and conclusions.

  • Year 5 line graph worksheets covering drawing and interpreting graphs with different scales
  • Statistics worksheets focused on reading and interpreting tables and extracting key information
  • Two-way table activities exploring relationships between different sets of data
  • Timetable interpretation tasks linked to real-life contexts

Coverage aligned to White Rose small steps

This block covers: drawing line graphs, reading and interpreting line graphs, reading and interpreting tables, two-way tables and interpreting timetables. Pupils move from constructing graphs and selecting suitable scales to analysing data, comparing values and solving problems using real-life contexts.
