Year 5 Spring Block 4 (Perimeter and Area)

Year 5 Maths – Spring Block 4: Perimeter and Area

Download our free Year 5 maths overview. Explore maths subject leader resources.

This block develops pupils’ understanding of perimeter and area, building securely from earlier learning to more complex rectilinear and compound shapes. Pupils begin by measuring and calculating the perimeter of rectangles, then apply efficient strategies to find the perimeter of rectilinear shapes and polygons.

As the unit progresses, pupils calculate area using square units, including square centimetres and square metres, and use multiplication to find the area of rectangles. They then move on to area of compound shapes and practise estimating the area of irregular shapes on squared grids. Reasoning and problem-solving tasks are used throughout to deepen understanding and tackle common misconceptions between perimeter and area.

White Rose small steps
  • Perimeter of rectangles
  • Perimeter of rectilinear shapes
  • Perimeter of polygons
  • Area of rectangles
  • Area of compound shapes
  • Estimate area
National Curriculum objectives
  • Measure and calculate the perimeter of composite rectilinear shapes in centimetres and metres
  • Calculate and compare the area of rectangles (including squares), including using standard units, square centimetres (cm²) and square metres (m²), and estimate the area of irregular shapes

Year 5 perimeter and area resources (Spring Block 4)

Our Year 5 perimeter and area resources for Spring Block 4 follow the White Rose small steps, with a clear progression from calculating perimeter to finding and estimating area. Pupils build accuracy with cm and m, then apply square units (cm² and m²) when working with area, so the difference between perimeter and area stays secure.

What’s included in each lesson pack

Every lesson includes teaching slides, differentiated worksheets and targeted reasoning and problem-solving tasks, so pupils practise fluency and also explain and justify their methods.

  • Year 5 perimeter worksheets covering rectangles, rectilinear shapes and polygons
  • Year 5 area worksheets covering area of rectangles and area of compound shapes
  • Reasoning and problem-solving tasks, including missing lengths and composite shapes
  • Estimate area activities using squared grids for irregular shapes

Coverage aligned to White Rose small steps

This block covers: perimeter of rectangles, perimeter of rectilinear shapes, perimeter of polygons, area of rectangles, area of compound shapes and estimate area. It supports pupils to move from measuring and adding sides, to using efficient calculation strategies, to splitting compound shapes into rectangles to find total area.

If you are searching for Year 5 perimeter of rectilinear shapes worksheets, area of compound shapes Year 5 lesson packs, or White Rose aligned perimeter and area planning, you’ll find complete coverage here with strong progression and built-in challenge.
