This block develops pupils’ understanding of fractions as operators and strengthens their ability to calculate fractions of amounts. Children move from multiplying unit and non-unit fractions by integers to working confidently with mixed numbers and larger quantities.

Across the unit, pupils use bar models, number lines and structured methods to calculate fractions of quantities, find the whole and make links between multiplication and division. Reasoning and problem solving are built in throughout to deepen understanding and accuracy.

White Rose small steps
  • Multiply a unit fraction by an integer
  • Multiply a non-unit fraction by an integer
  • Multiply a mixed number by an integer
  • Calculate a fraction of a quantity
  • Fraction of an amount
  • Find the whole
  • Use fractions as operators
National Curriculum objectives
  • Multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers, supported by materials and diagrams
  • Solve problems involving increasingly harder fractions to calculate quantities
  • Use fractions to divide quantities, including non-unit fractions where the answer is a whole number

Our Year 5 fractions resources for Spring Block 2 follow the White Rose small steps and provide a clear progression from multiplying fractions to finding fractions of amounts and finding the whole. Each lesson is carefully structured to build understanding using visual models alongside formal methods.

These Year 5 fractions worksheets and lesson resources include teaching slides, differentiated worksheets and targeted reasoning and problem-solving tasks. They support pupils in making connections between fractions, multiplication and division, while giving teachers reliable, high-quality materials for teaching fractions with confidence.
